Jordan Places to Visit
1. Petra
It probably goes without saying, but Petra should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Jordan!
The ancient rock-hewn city of Petra is the crown jewel of Jordan, and for good reason. Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom from around the 4th century BC. However, earthquakes in 363 and 551 AD largely destroyed the city. For centuries, Petra was lost to all but the local Bedouin tribes until being discovered by a British explorer in 1812.
As you’ll discover, Petra is remarkably well preserved. It’s full of architectural gems like the famed Treasury and Monastery, a Roman theatre, extravagant tombs, a colonnaded street, plus many temples and other structures.

2. Wadi Rum
Wadi Rum is a protected desert area where Bedouin tribes have lived for centuries, and is another highlight of Jordan. While Bedouins are traditionally nomadic, these days most of the local Bedouins live in the village or in more permanent desert camps.
You can either do a day trip to Wadi Rum from Petra or Aqaba, or stay overnight at one of the Bedouin desert camps. Make like Lawrence of Arabia and explore the desert by jeep, camel, horse or on foot, and get a taste of local Bedouin traditions and hospitality.

3. Dead Sea
There’s two very good reasons to visit the Dead Sea. Firstly, to experience weightlessness and skin-enriching minerals as you float effortlessly in one of the saltiest water bodies in the world. Secondly, to relax at one of the high end resorts that line the coast. Pure luxe!
4. Amman
Amman is Jordan’s capital city. It’s an eclectic mix of traditional and modern, with ancient Roman ruins, a vibrant Downtown district, and trendy rooftop bars thrown in.

5. Dana Biosphere Reserve
Dana is a hidden gem of Jordan, and is a must for avid hikers. The small village of Dana is perched on a hill which overlooks the rocky mountains and sweeping valley below. The valley is full of beautiful wadis (river beds) and siqs (canyons).
You can explore Dana Biosphere Reserve with hikes ranging from a few hours to a few days. The landscape is pretty unique, and is more of the desolate-and-dramatic variety than the tropical-and-lush variety. Add Dana to your list of places to visit in Jordan if you love hiking and breathtaking scenery.

6. Madaba
Madaba is famed for its Greek Orthodox Churches where Byzantine-era mosaics were uncovered. While several churches are worth visiting, the highlight is St George’s Church. The floor of St George’s Church has a large ancient mosaic map. The map depicts major biblical sights in the Middle East, with intricate tiles detailing the rivers, oceans and mountains from Egypt to Palestine.
7. Kerak
Kerak is a small town with a big attraction – Kerak Castle. The Kerak Castle is a Crusader castle which was built in the 12th century. Like many Jordanian historical sites, it’s been reincarnated over the years. In later centuries, the castle acted as a stronghold for the Mamluk and Ottoman forces.
8. Jerash
Jerash is home to some of the best preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy. You’ll be greeted by the imposing Arch of Hadrian, and transported back in time as you walk the streets of the ancient town.
Imagine chariots racing around the Hippodrome, people buying goods at the bustling markets, ceremonies taking place at the temple of Zeus, and endless columns lining the Road to Philadelphia (old Amman).
9. Wadi Mujib
Wadi Mujib is a nature reserve on the Dead Sea Highway with spectacular river canyon hiking. The most popular (and shortest!) hike is the 2km Siq Trail hike / wade / swim (depending on water levels!) through the canyon. One for the adventurers!
10. Aqaba
Aqaba is a coastal town in Jordan’s south on the Red Sea. Aqaba’s a perfect stop for beach bums, divers, and others who are seeking to unwind after long days walking around Petra.

I would love to visit Jordan – I already have the Dead Sea on my list (I can’t swim – knee problems – but I know that there you just… float :D) and Petra. I just found more things to add to my list!
Floating is the best! I think I’ll give up Swimming altogether!
Ugh I want to go to Jordan SO badly! Petra and the Dead Sea obviously but hiking in a river canyon also sounds like such a good experience!! Great list, thanks for the inspiration.
